Mulch Calculator
Planning a landscaping project? Our Mulch Calculator helps you determine the exact volume of mulch required to cover your garden beds, preventing overspending and multiple trips to the garden center.
Calculate Mulch
How to Use the Mulch Calculator
Measure Area
Measure the length and width of the garden bed or area you intend to mulch in feet.
Decide Depth
Enter your desired mulch depth in inches. A standard depth is usually 2 to 3 inches.
Get Results
The calculator instantly provides the total cubic yards and the number of bags needed.
The Mulch Calculation Formula
Calculating mulch volume involves finding the total cubic feet and then converting it to cubic yards (the standard bulk measurement). Here is the manual formula used by our calculator:
Volume (Cubic Yards) = (Length × Width × (Depth / 12)) / 27
- Length & Width: Measured in feet (ft).
- Depth: Measured in inches (in), then divided by 12 to convert to feet.
- 27: The number of cubic feet in one cubic yard.
Landscaping Pro Tips
Weed Prevention
A 3-inch layer is optimal for suppressing weeds and retaining soil moisture without suffocating plant roots.
Compaction Factor
Mulch settles over time. It's often wise to add 10% extra to your order to account for natural settling and uneven ground.
Bag vs. Bulk
For projects over 1 cubic yard, buying in bulk from a local landscaping yard is usually significantly cheaper than buying individual bags.
Application Timing
Late spring is the best time to mulch, as it helps trap winter moisture and keeps the soil cool during the heat of summer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
A standard bag of mulch is 2 cubic feet. Since there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, it takes exactly 13.5 bags to equal one cubic yard.
How deep should mulch be?
For general garden use, a depth of 2 to 3 inches is ideal. For weed suppression in areas without plants, you can go up to 4 inches, but avoid "volcano mulching" around tree trunks.
Does mulch weight matter?
Mulch is sold by volume because the weight varies significantly based on moisture content. Wet mulch can weigh twice as much as dry mulch, but the volume coverage remains the same.
